Press Release – Rebecca Hodges Edits BBC Select Documentary, How I Created a Cult
Boston, MA – 4/21/2021 – Filmmaker and editor Rebecca Hodges is proud to have contributed to the acclaimed documentary series How I Created a Cult, picked up by BBC Select and streaming beginning in May 2021. Directed by Meagen Gibson, the series explores the spectacular rise and fall of charismatic yet controversial spiritual leader Andrew Cohen and his organization, EnlightenNext.
Through extensive archival footage and in-depth interviews with former members—and Cohen himself—the series reveals what life was like inside the organization. Once revered as a visionary teacher, Cohen ultimately faced widespread accusations of psychological abuse, coercive control, and exploitation, unraveling what had grown into a lucrative global empire.
Editing all six episodes of the series required immense dedication, creativity, and discipline. Rebecca devoted herself fully to the project, often working late nights and early mornings in the edit bay to ensure the story was told with clarity, sensitivity, and depth. This commitment to the storytelling process was essential to weaving together the perspectives of survivors, insiders, and Cohen himself into a compelling and nuanced narrative.
For Hodges, working on the series was more than a professional opportunity: “I was honored to be part of the storytelling,” she shared. “This series isn’t just about a cult—it’s about real people’s lives, and the profound impact Andrew Cohen’s leadership had on them. Being part of shaping how those stories were told was deeply meaningful. And working alongside Meagen, my director, was nothing short of amazing.”
How I Created a Cult remains a powerful and timely exploration of the psychology of devotion, the allure of spiritual movements, and the dangers of unchecked power.
